Millions of young women will go on to join a sorority during their time in college, but not all of the organizations are created equal; even those with sterling reputations can get mired in scandal. We had to do 10 hours throughout the semester, and you would get charged $5 for every hour you missed. In my sorority experience, it wasn't a hard rule. OMG, the fines. The line made sense where I said it, but I skipped a couple people by accident. To me, the hard pledgeships are the âgoodâ ones. No derailing. I'd say this one comes almost directly from the media (hello, Legally Blonde.) No personal attacks. Ha, I know it seems really weird from an outside perspective, but running any organization takes a lot of work, and there have to be rules to make sure that everyone contributes. [–]Smokinacesfan55 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (5 children). Archived. The culture can vary SO MUCH from place to place. Getting a rape kit done is awful. But for the most part, the friendship was extremely superficial. When I explained it his only response was; "You mean people make you pay to be their friend?". Busy all of the time. I do already have a social life and go out, but I am studying engineering so there is some serious work/life balance that is pretty challenging even with my current, moderately sized social life. There are some required events, but you are absolutely not forced to go to as many as possible. Yes, even for non-residential club style sororities. Yeah, that's definitely a Southern thing. The organized structure can add or remove stress from your life. If you are wondering where the money goes, it goes to the HQ of said frat or sorority, and then it goes to events within the chapter. Worst: The stereotypes, the house-bashing, the feeling that I sometimes didn't fit in because I wasn't friends with EVERY single woman in the chapter, and most of formal recruitment (informal recruitment is a much better way to get to know PNMs). /r/hair I wore jorts one day, and received too many dirty looks to count. A few frats had some light hazing incidents (one had a scavenger hunt, some drinking), but I never heard of any sororities doing any hazing, and my chapter was absolutely zero tolerance on this. [–]Decker87 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (0 children). I had just gotten to college! -I still get inspired by the strong women from my sorority and their accomplishments. They forced them so sit on a washing machine naked and anything that jiggled they circled with magic marker. Itâs a difficult but not impossible situation. [–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (5 children). I don't see myself staying here after graduation. I was in Phi Sigma Rho the national engineering sorority. Which isn't as hard as it sounds. Nice girls, but they had been known to start shit with other sororities. I was very involved in college before I joined a sorority, and those were a higher priority to me than my sorority was. No seeking medical advice. DGs tend to enjoy a level of respect among other sororities … If you are not Greek, just remember this is just a stereotype and should not discourage you from becoming a member of any one of these fraternities or sororities. Most sororities have you pay a little over $1000 in dues per semester as a freshman because they give you an insane amount of presents (mostly clothing and various items with your sorority's letters on them so you can wear them around campus, but also a lot of handmade crafts from older sisters). Scavenger Hunts or forced study hours can be considered hazing. /r/xxfitness No specifying majority demographics or excluding minority groups based on demographics. Also, in several states, if you do get caught hazing or being hazed (YES EVEN THE PLEDGES ARE LIABLE) and you don't tell, you can be arrested for it. It does not sound warm and fuzzy (or even healthy), but I bet greek life does vary a ton. That would shut down any interest in Greek life for me. What sororities are upper and lower tier? BLACK GREEK STEREOTYPES Ever wanted the 411 on Black Greeks? It also gave me other ways of being involved like being on the Greek Council, planning events, reviewing policy, etc. Clubs work rather well, or just studying partner as well. Plus, for things like charity events, how many peoples' social groups are organized enough to plan a charity event? Basically, it's a nice way of saying "They aren't attractive/involved/smart/outgoing/etc." FIJI Islander is their signature party and itâs a good time. Easiest pledge experience of the top-tier. From school to school things vary a lot. By joining a sorority, it is so much more than just socials and going out on the weekend; its about being involved in something bigger than yourself and creating friendships that’ll last for a lifetime. At that point they can wear letters and claim the organization. Since we're so small we don't have that strict of rules about events or fines, they understand that school comes first but of course we're encouraged to go to as much as we can. Links MUST be accompanied by a summary. Thank you to all the women who shared their stories both good and bad, you have given me a lot of valuable advice. No using URL-shortening sites. But there were other groups on-campus that required a much higher time and financial commitment. I remember they were really proud of the fact that they had the most openly gay members. Overall a positive experience for me mostly though. Within the chapter members, as well as Alumni. What did you have to work the hardest for? This meant for me that I had half a dozen girls to study with for hard classes. I joined because this organization is awesome, it's small and I was very impressed by the women who were members when I joined. If your GPA was suffering, you'd meet with the scholarship chair and together make a plan on how to improve your studies. They shoved me in the back and gave no apology for being horrible assholes to someone who just did them a favor. I don't have a good reason for why, I just didn't like them, but we HAD to go to a certain number each semester. Well, this is very true, but, if you are working full time in order to afford college, that whole online thing is pretty awesome AND networks you to people because you are forced to interact with them through forums and email, and in some cases, you meet up for beers in order to have something that resembles a study group. That's kinda priceless. I have the money, but for me personally, it was not worth the huge financial obligation. What do they do these days? You miss an event because you were studying for a test the next day? I like that there is an understanding about my crazy workload, but one of the reasons I want to be a part of greek life is to meet people other than engineering students for a change. Those connections are important, and I can only imagine how useful it is when you know more than 15 people. I keep getting ask about a code. Also, consider this: > If you interview for a job and the hiring supervisor also went to your school then it's gonna help. I'm from the south and would never have gone Greek at a cookie cutter sorority like the ones at big universities down here but I went to a small school up north and did go Greek. Like, we couldn't even call the new members certain nicknames (cutesy things like "babies" "nuggets", etc.). I love my big and my twin and am so grateful to know them, but that's about the only part of being in a sorority that I enjoyed. The time commitment thing worries me a little. One who gets good grades, does service, and contributes to her community. I guess I am wondering what types of activities they make you do, regardless of race of the council. My GPA came up and I loved the philanthropy. You might think it's outrageous that our exec board would tell you to take a picture off of facebook if you were doing something illegal/highly inappropriate, or they wouldn't let you dress super slutty to an event, or they'd want you to dress appropriately for other events, but I'd say that's helping others act responsibly and not embarrass themselves. I am a much more laid back person. Bonus question I just thought of: If you had to do it all over again, would you still chose your sorority, if any? Is just justifying themselves. Focus on scholarship. I agree! Overall, I have a pretty awesome social life even without being in a sorority (I party just as much as my sorority friends), but if you want to get involved in something and want networking, and friends, and all the stuff flaunted as being perks of greek life, then go for it! However, a few of my non-greek friends have been expressing a lot of judgement, usually based on negative sorority stereotypes. Recruitment was a tough process and I was cut from most of the houses early on because of being an upperclassman. They put all the girls that they didn't think were "pretty enough" into one group, then scheduled this group for the least amount of time and for as little face time with pledges as possible. This is a common practice? Another friend was in a different sorority and she had similar experiences with being blindfolded and brought to random places. That is especially true in the sorority system where "sisterhood" is the motto. That said, sophomore through senior greek enrollment was over 2/3rds of the student body. That doesn't really fit well with being forced to go to meetings or be forced to pay the price...literally. If you have a test coming up on Monday, but you know you have a 6 hour initiation event on Sunday (which you would have known about at the beginning of the semester), you should start planning and studying ahead of time. To preface, my freshman year I went to a fraternity party and was raped. I donât think anyone disliked them. I've met so many people who were in my organization from other chapters and we instantly bond over that. I hear people say stuff like "that's a really weak sorority" and I'm like... what makes it weak? Although, nowadays I just don't care and wear whatever the F I want. Those terrible men are the ones to be blamed. It’s one of the worst and most over-exaggerated stereotypes about Tennessee. AEPhi- The first two, but Jewish American Princesses (JAPS). So my 2 cents? DAE or questions that can be answered with just a yes/no will be removed How has no one stood up to this or spoken out or IDK, flipped their shit? But the point is, I was never hazed while pledging and I love my sorority. I would recommend asking people at your school about the pros and cons, because they're bound to be different than what everyone here has to say. There was a rating process that allowed potential pledges and the sororities to rank each other. It's just true. Also, if they like a kid enough to offer him a bid and he vouches for you, theyâll likely take his word for it. Oh, and during rush they had very specific dress code, often requiring us to buy hundreds of dollars of clothing out of pocket. Please use "spoiler" formatting where appropriate. Someone from Northern Ireland here - the whole sorority system seems absolutely insane like some kind of cult. The men in fraternities seemed to encourage this pettiness, at least at my school, and were hugely racist, misogynist... really any type of bigot you can think of, they seemed to embody those ideals (clearly this isn't true of EVERY member). Holy shit. Close. If you aren't motivated to learn and to do your work without being forced into putting in the effort required of you...well, you haven't really learned to be conscientious, because being conscientious means you do the work without being forced to. Be specific: ask a general question, get a general answer. If you're curious and know a couple active members in a couple sororities fairly well, ask them about stuff like dues and philanthropy and whatever else. Now my school was hardcore about drinking rules and when the President of the chapter found out there would be drinking (but no men and no driving and 3/7 were 21) she shut down the Party. There is nothing more disheartening than sitting in a room full of women critiquing potential new members with their photos projected on a wall. Their members always just seemed to assume they were one of the big dogs on campus just because Sigma Chi is an excellent national fraternity with a dope alumni network, but the one at Tulane just happened to be an exception. I remember leaving a strip club early in the morning several times with groups of Phi Mus. I was in a fraternity and on exec while in the chapter. Really? I went to a tiny private school, though, and Greek life is a different beast there entirely. [–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (6 children). I'm not 30 yet - But I will say that finding female friends at a school that's 7 men:1 woman was challenging at first, so we found each other through greek life. I definitely encourage you to go Greek though, there are networking opportunities and friendships that last a lifetime. It really destroyed me, and I was very depressed. Mine did too. They’re old money rich girls and tend to only hang out with old row fraternities. I'd recommend reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities by Alexandra Robbins for real life examples. Sigma Chi- My least favorite house on campus, guys or girls. Basically if you were irresponsible or didn't give a fuck about anything, you got fined. Many girls in sororities (including myself), are tired of being labeled the “typical sorority girl.” This stereotype is typically about groups of girls who pay for friends, take pictures in letters, party, sleep around and occasionally do good for the community. Like ADPi, their sister sorority, theyâre Jewish, they party, and cocaine is definitely on the menu. I certainly don't agree with all the reputations and stereotypes out there but here they are: DG has the reputation of being the "rich" and stuck-up sorority.
